SLAG: The Major Solid Waste Generated In Foundry Units
In India, 51,96,880 tons of castings are produced per year by around 6,500 micro and small foundry enterprises. Foundry units produce cast irons. In their melting process, they use ‘coke fired cupola furnaces’. While producing the cast irons, 10% of the slag are generated along with it. These slag are useless byproduct of cast irons usually dumped in an open field and landfills in and around the foundry cluster. The manufacturers have problem in dumping the slag. In India, on an average 5,00,000 tons of slag are produced and dumped every year. They are left to serve no purpose than degrading the environment.
Do Not Dump The Slag
Dumping the slag in an open field and landfills cause soil degradation and produce the toxic level of arsenic lead, cadmium, barium, zinc, and copper. It causes land and air pollution gradually and affects the surroundings in the long run. In order to address this serious issue, Foundation for MSME Clusters (FMC) in lead with a group of 6 institutions (GIZ, GRI, SIDBI, IICA, andUNIDO) undertook a European Union-funded project “scaling up sustainable development for MSME Clusters” in four foundry clusters in India. These foundry clusters are located in Ludhiana, Phagwara, Jalandhar, Batala and Amritsar in Punjab, Jaipur and Ajmer cluster in Rajasthan and Howrah cluster in West Bengal covering almost 20% of the entire foundry sub sector of the country.
A research to eradicate the slag
A nine-month research study has been conducted along with a leading research institution, Development Alternatives (DA) in June 2104. The study was on ‘Research work on Development of Quality Building materials through Utilization of Foundry Waste’. As a result of this study, it has been concluded that the slag can be reused in making paver blocks and other non structural building materials.
